The present and future of box scores

April 12, 2011   by Mike Fratto

Statistics are a major focus at PrestoSports in 2011. Our enhanced statistics platform and XML box scores have been part of our core package for a few years and updating these features has been my primary goal since I started here in December.

The XML box scores are the gateway to enhanced stats, so we decided to upgrade these first. Box scores have long been a staple of the fan sport experience, and we are dedicated to making ours the best on the web.

The standard features we are adding to our box scores include support for in-progress games, a play-by-play tab and improved style. We started with basketball and ice hockey, then moved on to baseball/softball and men's and women's lacrosse. We have a few more improvements to the spring sports box scores in the pipeline, and then we will shift our attention to fall sports.

We're really happy with the progress so far, but we know there is a lot more work to be done. We're always grateful for your feedback. We wouldn't be able to improve the box scores as much and as quickly as we have without your help. Please know that we are listening to your suggestions and turning around changes as quickly as we can.

As excited as we are about the look and functionality of our new box scores within your website, we've heard the concerns that your coaches need to be able to print them out. We're currently developing monospace templates for single-game and season box scores, so look for those soon. That way you will have the best of both worlds: attractive web-based box scores as well as familiar-looking printable ones.

We encourage all of our clients to take advantage of the enhanced stats feature. Aside from sortable stat reports, it automatically includes a mini box score in your releases. And now that conferences can use PrestoSports to generate their weekly stat reports to submit to the NCAA, if everybody's stats are already in the PrestoSports system, that process becomes much easier.

You can be sure that the continued development of our box scores and enhanced stats is a priority and we are excited about what we can accomplish in the future!
