Stats priorities for this summer and fall

June 10, 2014   by Mike Fratto

At the Future of Statistics Workshop yesterday morning at CoSIDA, I was able to provide an update on what stats stuff we're working on this summer. I wanted to share that with everyone now.

Last week we added event management capabilities to the stats entry app itself. Now you can add, edit and remove events from the app without having to go to Game day. That of course syncs in the PrestoSports Network, so any changes you make will be reflected the next time you are on the Schedule tab in Game day.

Previously the only thing you could really do in the app was stat a game, and you had to do everything else in Game day. This summer it’s our goal to add key functions to the app so that you don’t have to jump back and forth. Event management was the start of that, and we’re also working on letting you manage your stats roster and configure your stats partners.

Our other goals for the summer include:

  1. Exporting PDF box scores and season stats from stats entry and Game day - We know XML box scores and enhanced stats aren’t preferred by everyone, so we need to give you a different format to post box scores and season stats on your site.
  2. Performance improvement for long games in stats entry - We've noticed a lag when a fast-paced game goes long (certain overtime basketball or 5th set volleyball). When those games have several hundred plays, a new play would take a second or two to save instead of being immediate.
  3. Adding highs/lows reports to enhanced stats - A key missing report to enhanced stats. We want to at least do the fall sports this summer and continue with winter and spring sports before their seasons start. If we find its easier to do them all at once, we might do that instead.

Looking ahead even further, here's other things we're prioritizing to get done in the fall or spring.

  1. Importing season XML for past seasons - Now that we have career stats, we want to work towards record books, and this is the next step for that.
  2. Test and release baseball and softball live scoring - We're planning to release baseball and softball live scoring for the spring season. The testing period will start when the men's College World Series is over. There's lots of ways to test: MLB games on TV, your local summer team, fall ball. Email me if you'd like to test.
  3. Figure out a solution for high schools, youth teams or practice games in stats entry - At the moment you can use stats entry if your team is part of a season in the PrestoSports Network. That cuts out most high schools, youth teams and anyone who wants to try it out without using an official game. We’ve been using fake seasons, beta seasons and online demos as a temporary solution, but we need a permanent one
