Admin design update and more

June 3, 2014   by Serge Knystautas

This week's release includes a visual change across the entire admin system as part of our year-long effort to redesign it.

We want this change to feel natural and gradual to you. Nothing has moved and there's nothing to re-learn, and even the colors are all close to what you're used to. Everything just looks nicer. See below a before and after screenshot of the Website browse page:

Before After

We are deliberately making this change feel natural because we have different goals than a site launch for fans. You spend hours every day working in our admin system, and a big splashy redesign would feel like we came in and rearranged everything on your desk. I don't think you'd appreciate that!

Since we called for feedback on our redesign last fall and launched develop.prestosports.com, I've read every one of your ideas on what we need to add and change in our admin system and have incorporated many of those ideas into our development plans. Last month we finished overhauling how files are uploaded so you now see progress bars and can drag-n-drop in most browsers without Java. We also added the ability to hide seasons on the score entry screen so schools with lots of sports can hide ones that are out of season, made all navbar and standings editors drag-n-drop and standardized the buttons across Game day to have a consistent design.

Going forward, we'll build on this week's visual changes by moving towards an adaptive design for the admin system to replace the mobile admin system we built many years ago. We're also reviewing many options to improve navigation  for example, we're finding almost nobody is using "QR codes" in Website or "Upcoming" in Game day. These changes will be rolled out in stages, and we're being careful to never jump back and forth between design decisions so it should always feel like a natural change.

Finally, there are several features that should make your life easier including:

  • a new photo manager
  • our long-discussed unified bios editor so that you can edit your website bios and stats roster at the same time
  • an upgrade to our article rich editor
  • HTML5 video
  • general releases and auto-publish rules so you're not spending so much time hiding and showing links

Please join in the discussion on develop.prestosports.com as we'd love to hear your ideas.
