Paper...yet another way to use Facebook

January 30, 2014   by Neil Sleight

Facebook announced an app today called Paper  a new way to follow your friends' posts while on the go. While the features of Paper are nothing ground-breakingI think the fact that it is tailored to what most of us do on our phones with Facebook (look at pictures and follow news) makes a lot of sense.

Facebook started with an all-encompassing app that maintained the same features and content as the mobile version of Facebook. In the fall of 2011, it launched Messenger, giving that feature its own app, interface and focus. And on Monday, there will be an app for the News Feed on iOS (sorry Android folk).

This focus on developing an app for a specific feature or type of content is a trend in mobile development that Google has perfected. How many of you have a separate app for Google Maps, Gmail, Chrome, Chromecast and a widget for searching?

It will be interesting to see if this trend catches on in other areas. The first question I asked myself is, "Will there be a time when a school maintains separate apps for specific content?" It is not all that hard to imagine a time when your school may have a website, a mobile app for news and a mobile app for watching live games.

The precedent is already there with the ESPN SportsCenter app (news) and the Watch ESPN app (live events). I'd be interested in hearing what you think. If it was possible to do so, would you see your school going for something like this or would you rather stick to the all-encompassing app?
