Try out the hottest new marketing tool: QR codes

July 26, 2011   by Serge Knystautas

A QR code (abbreviated from Quick Response code) is a two-dimensional barcode that is readable by mobile phones and other scanners. Users with a mobile phone that have the correct app installed can scan the image of the QR code to open a web page in the phone's browser.

QR codes are a great new marketing tool, popping up everywhere from billboards to late-night comedy.

Late Night with Jimmy Fallon's QR code to special fan content from a 'Friday' spoof.  Point your mobile phone's QR scan software at this picture to get to the hidden content.

With the release of Version 4.4.0, you will be able to generate QR codes for your website and any page in it to help get your fans the latest information about your teams, sponsors and anything else you can think of!

Part of what makes QR codes great is their versatility — you can link to to practically any page on your site. Some ideas for how you could use them are:

  • QR code to the team schedule on team posters
  • QR code to live stats in the stadium
  • QR code to a team stats page in media guides
  • QR code to a special advertiser page so fans can learn more about why that sponsor paid for that stadium promotion.

Taking advantage of QR codes is a quick and easy way to do some creative marketing. Once this week's release comes out, go into the Website tab to the new QR Codes section and get the QR code for your site and a new way to link the page you want to direct fans to.

There are plenty of good apps for both Android (QR Droid, Barcode Scanner) and iPhone (QR Reader for iPhone, Scan), and reading a QR code with your phone is as easy as taking a picture.

Try it out once you create one for your site and comment below to let us know how you're using it!
