Using Targeted Links and Splash Pages To Direct Traffic

June 17, 2010   by Robb Modica

In an age of ever present media, being able to attract and direct traffic to specific pages of your website is becoming more important.

Through the use of targeted links and splash pages you can make sure fans can find pages highlighting information on promotions, stores, honors, recruitment, and success.

Targeted URLs

Long URLs are difficult for the fan to remember and advertising where space is limited, such as an arena banner, ticket back, or game program, can be challenging. Being able to use a short URL such as http://www.gocrimson.com/tickets can provide a memorable URL while redirecting to content on your site.

Using the "link" content type, you can create a page in the root directory (/) with a short name and redirect to the content page.

A second approach would be to create a targeted link (such as www.mywebsite.com/promotions) which can be redirected to different content throughout the year without having to change which URL is publicized or edit the content which may change over time.

Another way to target fans is to use splash pages. The most common way to use a splash page is as the first page fans see when they come to your domain.

However, splash pages can be setup on specific links such as the navigation to a sport page. For instance, you could highlight a game promotion such as a "white-out" at an upcoming football game by putting a splash page on on the link to /sports/fball/index catching visitors looking for information on football.
